Trying to start a "Community Garden Group" in Portage la Prairie. Had a great meeting April 10th with guest speakers from Winnipeg and several local interested people.
Biggest hurdle right now, obtaining some land.... there are several possible places around town. Along 3rd St NW north of the arena, by the Fisher St CMHA building, land owned by the CN, land owned by the City...both of those involve getting their permission. Seems I am having more progress with the City than the CN, but time is passing and the growing season is getting closer.
I feel that Community Gardens not only address healthy food, and food security, they are also Community builders, where people come and share, build friendships.
Next we need to decide what best meets the Community at larges needs, garden plots that are the responsibly of individuals, or a garden that everyone shares the work as well as the harvest, and how responsibilities would be broken up.
I would like to see raised beds for various reasons, with water reservoirs and landscape cloth and multch between beds. Ideally I would like us to apply for an Manitoba Hydro grant for an "Urban Forest" apple trees, nanking cherries, saskatoons, high bush cranberry, plums, rhubarb, asparagus, perennial foods.
A water source is important, I am thinking a holding tank that hopefully the City would fil for us. Also discussed was a sandpoint, but it would need electricity and an artisan well (if possible).
Any suggestions out there would be greatly appreciated. yvette.cuthbert@gmail.com
